Opening night was amazing, with approximately 350
people in attendance over a three-hour period. Elana Munroe,
a photography student at the University of Georgia, was
awarded first place for her image, "Climb." We
also awarded 2nd and 3rd places and three honorable mentions.
Congratulations to Ms. Munroe, the other winners, and all
the artists involved for providing a great collection of
images.
Prior to the opening, we had a visit from Martin DeWitt,
founding museum director of the new Fine Arts Building at
Western Carolina University. DeWitt made six purchases of
work by five photographers, including first place "Climb,"
for the museum's permanent collection. Penumbra is very
proud of the support we received from the university. DeWitt
promises to continue such support in future exhibitions.

Opening
Night March 27th
We
have launched a new online gallery representing all kinds
of art from the Western North Carolina area. We have made
it as simple as possible in order to create an affordable
web space. This site's benefits and features are:
• Acts as an Online Community.
• There will be a curated section (web page) rotating
six times a year. The curators will be local gallery directors
or owners. In return for their help we will feature their
galleries in the same section, thus making connections between
the galleries and the artists.
• We will also feature a different artist every other
month. Featured artists will have the opportunity to share
information about themselves and their work with our visitors.
It's
hard to believe that on July 12 we will have been open for
a full year! It has at times been a difficult and tough road,
but we have accomplished a lot. We have a New Work
section on our web site and plan to have an opening sometime
in July to show this work and celebrate our first anniversary.
Please stay tuned for the announcement of the date, which
should be on a Saturday in mid to late July.
